General Engines unveiled its latest electric pickup truck, the new GMC Sierra Electric, and on Thursday began taking orders for the $107,000 fully loaded Sierra EV Denali Edition 1.

The automaker plans to begin shipping the Edition 1 in early 2024 and add cheaper versions of the Sierra EV — starting at around $50,000 — later that year.

He says the pickup will offer buyers something different when it hits dealerships, even though it shares a lot of technology with GMC’s Hummer EV pickup and SUV and the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV.

One of the biggest differences between GMC’s wild Hummer EV and the new electric Sierra may be the new truck’s traditional pickup shape. GMC brand chief Duncan Aldred said it’s part of GM’s strategy.

“It will appeal to different customers, the more traditional truck buyers, whereas the Hummer EV appeals to people of all brands, like exotic sports cars,” Aldred said at a press briefing Thursday. “For the Hummer EV, we found that 70% of customers who made a reservation were not familiar with electric vehicles, and about 75% of those customers were not familiar with the GMC brand.”

“It’s going to have a different feel, really appeal to the loyalists,” he said.

Like the Hummer and Silverado pickups, the GMC Sierra EV will have a range of about 400 miles, fast charging, and the four-wheel steering that became popular with early Hummer owners.

But unlike the Silverado, which will initially be offered in Work Truck trim for about $40,000 with more expensive trims, GMC will introduce the most expensive version of its new Sierra EV.

Key features of the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 include a “Max Power Mode” that will deliver around 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque; a trailerable version of GM’s Super Cruise driving system; 800-volt fast charging capability, adding up to 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes with a 350-kilowatt fast charger; and several smart storage options that take advantage of Ultium EV’s flat-floor architecture.

An echo of a popular competitor feature FordThe Sierra F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck, the Sierra EV, will be able to serve as a mobile power source with 10.2 kilowatts of power available through up to 10 outlets and the ability to power a home for days in the event of a failure.

Aldred said that while the Edition 1 is expensive, later Sierra EVs will be priced to compete with rivals like the Lightning, which starts at about $52,000. Another rival, smaller Rivsky R1T pickup from $73,000.

“Average easy maintenance [internal combustion] The Sierra today trades for an average of $65,000, and the segment [average] costs just under $60,000, Aldred said. – This means that we will place the Sierra EV in the center of the pickup segment.

While the expensive Edition 1 is expected to generate significant profits for GM, the low-cost versions will be key to the company’s plan to rapidly increase sales of electric vehicles in the middle of the decade while remaining profitable. CEO Mary Barra has said that GM will go completely electric by 2035.

General Motors will report its third-quarter results before the US markets open on Tuesday.
