“It has been a great pleasure to get up every morning for 33 years to come and work here,” sums up Isabelle with her husband Laurent, who confirms the “extraordinary location”.

So it was decided: the Jonau couple hand over, after 33 years at the helm of Sunset, then Signature on the beach of Pornichet (Atlantique Loire).

No nostalgia, because the choice is desired and assumed. “We stop before it’s too late, for health, but in total peace,” explains the owner of the emblematic brand Pornichetine.

“Passion brought us there”

It all started in 1989. “We ended up running Tennis Country Club Barrière for eight years,” recalls Isabelle.

We wanted to start, and our idea was to cook fish on the grill with a view of the sea. This creation, all made of wood, which we named Sunset from the beginning. And we opened in June 1990.”

To never close again.

However, nothing forced this couple, she is a pharmacy student, he is the chief mechanic of the merchant fleet, to pursue a career in public catering. “It’s the passion that brought us there,” sums up the Gerande resident, who passed through big houses like Lenotre to train. “Laurent always had an extraordinary fish preparation, and little by little we moved into the high-end market. »

“Wonderful memories”

The restaurateur smiles at the mention of his regular customers.

Now we have adults coming back to tell us that they had lunch here with their grandparents while playing on the beach out front.

And in order to summon a magical “glass with a team at the end of every service, luxurious weddings, Russian evenings or New Year’s holidays. Loud atmosphere. These are incredible memories.”

While Isabel pampers customers in the dining room, in the kitchen, it is Laurent who will set the pace all these years, and from appetizer to dessert, quality will always be present.

Although a lot has changed in catering, we have continued to work with our products in the same vein, keeping our flagship products such as stuffed crab, sweetbreads, sole, which we have been making since the beginning.

Isabel Jonot does not forget to mention their two children. “At a very young age, they took part in the adventure from the inside, lived a fabulous life here.”

The turning point with the 2006 Beach Ordinance

Since 2006, the situation has changed with the desire to introduce a beach ordinance (dismantling of structures every winter, if strict regulations are not followed).

Gulf professionals, gathered in an association led by Laurent Janot, will fight for 10 years before “the state achieves its goals” in 2016.

In 2013, feeling the changes, the spouses Jono decided to develop the institution. Good bet. Sunset becomes La Signature, and following the trends, the chef opens his menu with burgers, salads, revised pasta, sushi, all of the same quality.

In March 2017, we decided to break everything down so that the structure would remain open year-round, complying with the conditions of the beach decree. In three months, everything is disassembled and reassembled

The leaders will eventually overcome the pandemic with takeaway sales, then the creation of Le Sunset café beach bar in the spring of 2021. “Of course, we will miss her, but we are leaving calmly, and we will return with pleasure,” concludes the hostess.
